Hal Calamvokis gained a Masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering (MEng) from Imperial College, London, in 1991 and then worked for British Aerospace in Filton, UK. He then moved to Airbus Industrie in Toulouse, France, in aircraft certification and safety management on the A320 programme before joining EUROCONTROL in Brussels, Belgium, working in air traffic control management. Hal then gained a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from London Business School in 2000, after which he worked as a Management Consultant.
Hal joined Low Cost Carrier easyJet in Luton, UK, in 2004 to help formalise the as Procurement Team and was responsible for all non-aircraft or airport procurement activity in easyJet. He then helped to set up the Planning Team in 2006 and as Strategic Planning Manager Hal’s work included fleet strategy, aircraft specification, maintenance strategy, M&A activity, environmental strategy, airport competition plus market and competitor analysis.
Hal left easyJet in 2010 and then worked on an airline start-up while also doing independent strategic consulting (focusing on the aerospace and aviation sectors, including airport M&A work). In 2013 Hal moved to aircraft lessor AWAS in Dublin, Ireland, as Market Analysis and Strategy Director, reporting to both the Chief Commercial Officer and the Chief Investment Officer. In 2017 Hal joined the Aviation Finance division of Standard Chartered Bank as Director – Aviation Finance (also in Dublin) where his responsibilities include strategy, aircraft valuations and asset selection.
